Today I found this story I wrote while living in Wisconsin. It made me feel much better about the lane
closures we’re dealing with here in Raleigh.
Can you get through Ripon?
Since the city barricaded Hwy. 23 for street repairs, I have zigged one
way and zagged the other in search of a connecting link. I figured it out. You may take notes. (Warning:
Do not attempt this without insurance.)
How to get through Ripon heading west: Cross the 4-way stop at the corner of East
Fond du Lac and Blackburn. Cross a 3-way
stop at the corner of Watson and Seward.
Don’t get disturbed wondering what happened to East Fond du Lac
Street. Just accept on good faith that
you are now on Seward.
If you make it that far, take a right on Elm then a left at
the first pothole. After the street
signs vanish, find Union Street and hang a right. Proceed across several yards of missing road
and Bingo! You’re at Hwy 23 West.
If (heaven forbid) you have to drive into the center of Ripon, pray. You will encounter a 5-point
intersection. One street has a yield
sign, one splits into two stop signs for left and right turns, one has a stop
sign with a “right turn no stop” sign under it, one has the right of way, and
the other is a one-way that heads out of the intersection – so you don’t have
to worry about that one, except you don’t know that when you’re in the
intersection.
How to return:
You follow the same route, but the potholes change. I hope this helps.
